OUR LOCATIONS
Little Pieces of Paradise
Our locations are diverse in location and terrain, as we begin the baby steps of a bold ambition. They will gradually form steppingstones as our footprint grows and we are able to link more locations with protected spaces. One thing however is common – all locations have enchanting natural beauty and are home to the most remarkable creatures on this little paradise. Outlined below are a few of them.
Ambadandegame, Ella - Ravana’s Secret
"Ravana's Secret" is hidden in over 100 acres of neglected hillside tea and forested land surrounding the Upper Ravana Falls a few miles above Ella. The owners have been purposely allowing some of the land to go "back to nature", like a private reserve encouraging local flora and fauna.
Atalugama, Kanangama
Kanangama, a 19-acre property in Dehiowita, Kegalle District, marks the 30th site under the PLANT initiative. Located in Sri Lanka’s wet zone, this site lies within the Indian Tropical Coastal Forest Bioregion (IM2)- a globally significant ecological zone that includes the Sri Lanka Lowland and Montane Rainforests.
Belihuloya, Ratnapura District – Budunwela Reserve
This land is margined by a forest reserve belonging to the Department of Forest Conservation in one side and the Uwa Kosgama village on the another.
Deniyaya - Kaley Teas
Kaley Teas was the first partner property brought under the PLANT umbrella, in May 2021.
Dikhena, Badureliya – WNPS ROAR Project, Diyakothkanda
ROAR (Reforestation Of A Rainforest) is the oldest running project of WNPS. These learnings provided much needed background for us to pursue our PLANT ambitions. After an initial setback, the project was resuscitated and developed under sound scientific principles in 2016 with the assistance and guidance of Professors Savitri and Nimal Gunatilleke and Dr. Suranjan Fernando.
Gallpallewatta, Ratnapura District – Issengard Biosphere Reserve
A partially cultivated but largely forested 15 Acre block of land, the focus within Issengard Biosphere Reserve is on conserving and preserving existing forested areas, adding new trees and plants to enhance and expand the Forest cover over time, and to conduct biodiversity research.
Green Isle – Bellanwila–Attidiya Wetland Sanctuary
Green Isle is a 40-acre island located within the Bellanwila–Attidiya Wetland Sanctuary on the southeastern outskirts of Colombo. Gazetted in 1990, the sanctuary is part of the upper catchment of the Bolgoda river basin and is home to over 150 bird species, 20 mammal species including Mousedeer, Otters, Fishing Cats, and Rusty Spotted Cats, as well as saltwater crocodiles and rock pythons.
Halwathura Estate - Horana Plantations
Nestled along the Kaluganga river basin, the Halwatura Estate is a sprawling 612 hectare estate managed by Horana Plantations of Hayleys Group. The Group, renowned world over as one of the world’s most awarded and certified sustainable plantation groups, has partnered with WNPS PLANT to further its environmental conservation efforts across many of its properties.
Kumbaloluwa Estate - Mirigama
FormerSri Lankan President, His ExcellencyJ.R. Jayewardene, partly inherited and partly acquired other blocks of their ancestral Kumbaloluwa Estate and would spend considerable time at this location. Even today, many pictures and artefacts around the bungalow within it, remind visitors of his connection with it.
Living Heritage - Koslanda
Tucked away on the slopes of Koslanda, this 80 acre site would have once been virgin rainforest. Many lands in this vicinity have seen the cultivation of tea and other crops including rubber, coffee and pepper over the years. Abandoned in the 1950s, nature began to reclaim the land once more and the result today is an intriguing mix of native Sri Lankan plants, long-forgotten crops and introduced species.
Lunuganga – Honduwa Island Sanctuary
Honduwa Island, a 20-acre estuarine island nestled within the Dedduwa Lake basin formed by the Bentota Ganga, is a unique ecological haven with a rich conservation legacy. Acquired by Geoffrey Bawa in the 1970s and declared a wildlife sanctuary during his lifetime, the island has been protected from development and degradation for over five decades.
Maskeli Oya - Horana Plantations
Horana Plantations became the trailblazer to lead the largest reforestation project of its kind at that point when it collaborated withWNPS PLANT and embarked on a restoration project along the Maskeliya Oya, in the Nuwara Eliya District. The initiative hoped to create a nine kilometer forest corridor and over 125 acres of new forest in the Upcot Valley of the central highlands.
Minuwan Ella, Deraniyagala
In May 2022, a yearlong effort came to fruition when PLANT completed acquisition of three parcels of adjoining lands in the ecologically sensitive Peak Wilderness area off Erathna. The properties on the Minuwan Ella Estate, ensure around Forty-four Acres of refuge to a very diverse range of species.
Nawimana, Matara
Nawimana, an 11-acre property in Matara, Southern Sri Lanka, joined the PLANT initiative in September 2024. Owned by Mr. Sanjay Kulatunga, the site is located within the Nilwala River Basin and features a unique hilltop that offers panoramic views of Matara town and the Indian Ocean on one side, and the lush Nilwala Valley on the other.
Olupattuduwa – Bolgoda, Kalutara
This 20 A land was the first private land donation towards PLANT, and a great example of how some individuals would be willing to set aside their lands for future generations rather than for money or their families.
Pannila, Matugama - Aranya Foundation
Aranya, a 15 Acre property in Pannila, is located within 5 km of the Rare Species site location south-east of Welipenna, near Uthumgama, and is also in within a similar distance of the Yagirala Forest reserve, a two thousand hectare reserve which appears to be a "true tropical rain forest" and is as old as Sinharaja.
Pannila, Matugama - Nisarga Reserve
Nisarga is a fifteen-acre property which was secured by private individuals as an extension to link up with an existing PLANT property to buffer the aggressive deforestation going on around in those regions and provide an extended nature corridor.
