Halwathura Estate - Horana Plantations

Nestled along the Kaluganga river basin, the Halwatura Estate is a sprawling 612 hectare estate managed by Horana Plantations of Hayleys Group. The Group, renowned world over as one of the world’s most awarded and certified sustainable plantation groups, has partnered with WNPS PLANT to further its environmental conservation efforts across many of its properties. Horana Plantations has set aside 100 hectares of the Halwatura estate for ecosystem restoration, providing a crucial bridge in creating the Emerald Trail envisioned by PLANT.

The Halwatura Estate is located in the verdant hills of Kalutara, nurtured by the Kalu Ganga. It is part of Sri Lanka's wet zone, known for its high biodiversity. The PLANT initiative by WNPS aims to minimize habitat degradation and promote land recovery at the estate to restore healthy ecosystems. The initiative will reintroduce native and endemic flora that were once prevalent in these habitats. The reforesting efforts will not only safeguard charismatic species but also the lesser known yet crucial players integral to ecosystem health. Sustainable forestry practices will be implemented, whilst creating opportunities for surrounding communities. PLANT, in collaboration with Horana Plantations PLC, aspires to ensure the long-term sustainability of this lowland wet zone and the diverse life it harbors, through the creation of a protected lowland wet zone forest. PLANT extends its gratitude to Horana Plantations PLC for recognizing the critical need to protect and restore this invaluable stretch of land.

Initial efforts are ongoing to also create a new plant nursery on the property which will be the anchor for various plant needs for the reforesting work done both on the property and for other PLANT locations in similar regions.
