Pannila, Matugama - Nisarga Reserve

Nisarga is a fifteen-acre property which was secured by private individuals as an extension to link up with an existing PLANT property to buffer the aggressive deforestation going on around in those regions and provide an extended nature corridor.

Nisarga means Nature in Sanskrit and is an apt word to describe this rural forest patch which plays host to many interesting species. Nisarga is a fifteen-acre property which was secured by private individuals as an extension to link up with an existing PLANT property to buffer the aggressive deforestation going on around in those regions and provide an extended nature corridor. Birdlife is rich and complimented with several other species, many of which are endemic and special. Being located within 5 km of the Rare Species site location near Uthumgama (and similarly to the Yagirala Forest reserve, a two-thousand-hectare reserve which appears to be a "true tropical rain forest" and is as old as Sinharaja), the region is a hotspot of biodiversity but under extreme duress due to commercial exploitation of land, and urbanization. Enrichment of the flora will be undertaken in small patches where partial old agricultural plantations have existed. Rocky outcrops, a bordering stream and varied vegetation make a great recipe for species refuge and conservation.
