Geoffrey Bawa Trust and Lunuganga Trust
The Geoffrey Bawa Trust is a non-profit organization with charitable status in Sri Lanka that was established in 1982 with the objectives of furthering the fields of Architecture, the Fine Arts and Ecological and Environmental Studies. The associated Lunuganga Trust was set up in 1993 by Geoffrey Bawa with the objective of managing and preserving his estate following his passing, which includes the iconic Lunuganga Estate, now a heritage garden and boutique hotel, and surrounding lands in the Bentota estuary. Today, the Lunuganga Trust builds on Bawa’s emphasis on ecology and environmental studies as complements to art and architecture through a year-round programme of conservation projects, exhibitions, publications and talks.
Since its inception, the Lunuganga Trust has engaged partners across public and private environmental organisations and academia to study and preserve the significant biodiversity under its stewardship. In 2011, the Trust established a sanctuary for the critically endangered Hog Deer (Axis porcinus) on Honduwa Island, Lunuganga, in partnership with the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Following the success of this flagship project, the Trust aims to expand its ecological and conservation projects in the following years through ecological restoration, scientific research partnerships, and educational and community programmes.
