The Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, under the Department of National Botanic Gardens, serves as Sri Lanka’s premier institution for plant conservation, botanical research, and public education. Its mission is to provide opportunities for the public to study, admire, and sustainably conserve plant resources in both natural and cultivated environments.
With over 4,500 conserved plant species, including rare and endemic flora, the Gardens play a vital role in ex-situ conservation, floriculture development, and biodiversity awareness. The institution also supports sustainable tourism, community education, and scientific research through its herbarium and training centers. Peradeniya’s vision is to become the most impressive tropical botanical garden by maintaining excellence in botanical aesthetics and research, contributing meaningfully to Sri Lanka’s ecological and cultural legacy.
